President's Awards Luncheon with the Rising Stars of Turie T. Small Elementary

Bethune-Cookman University hosted the President's Award Luncheon recognizing the rising stars of Turie T. Small Elementary on Nov. 10. Students were recognized for being on the honor roll, for making academic gains, for good citizenship and for improved social skills. The event was held in the Center for Civic Engagement.

Dr. Earl Johnson, principal of Turie T. Smalls Elementary, thanked parents for being a part of their children’s success.  “You are the most important ingredient in your child's success,” he said. He also encouraged the future leaders to continue to conduct themselves in a way that will be recognized as being different.

Dr. Ida Wright, a Volusia County School Board member and Dean of the College of Entrepreneurship and Business, reminded students that intelligence plus character is the goal of education. “Character speaks more volume than intelligence,” she said. “Education is important to Volusia County as we want our children to be children of intelligence, integrity and character.”

Finally, B-CU President Dr. Edison O. Jackson said he was proud to celebrate academic excellence. “If you really want to be successful, try education,” He said. “Education takes you where you want to go.”

Turie T. Smalls Elementary students cheered as they received their awards. “I love working hard and being on the honor roll because I am rewarded with medals,” 4th grade student Benjamin Wells said.
