Approximately 300 Bethune-Cookman University students held their hands up to protest the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The students had gathered for an information session on Greek life at B-CU. The protest was organized by senior Reuben Rifin, of Naples, Fla.

White House Honors Dr. Herbert Thompson

B-CU Hosts Free Summer Academy for Local Children

Approximately 100 elementary school-age children descended on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University for a Summer Academy for rising third, fourth and fifth graders. Frolicking across the green lawns of the institution, the young students learned not only the basics such as reading, math and science, but also the importance of attending college and planning their future careers.

Reward increased to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in B-CU shooting

Bethune-Cookman University, the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) and the family of James Huger have put their resources together to offer a $10,000 reward for information in connection to Monday night’s shooting on the B-CU campus.

B-CU Campus and Students Reported Safe

The Daytona Beach Police Department responded to an early morning shooting in the 300 block of Henry Butts Street. The off-campus incident did result in four B-CU students being injured and taken to the hospital.

B-CU Partners with EPA to Create New Programs

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) will become official partners to incorporate programs in environmental science, research, education and workforce development. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 18th at the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center.

Two of the area’s most visible institutions serving the community have joined forces to form a partnership they hope will benefit the area for years to come. Bethune-Cookman University and the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA Association will host signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a press conference at 4 p.m., Jan. 14 at the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation House.

NSF Awards B-CU $400,000 Grant

The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant of $400,000 to Bethune-Cookman University for support of “Targeted Infusion Project: Developing Quantitative Expertise in the Undergraduate Biology Curriculum (QEUBiC).” The project is directed by Dr. Raphael D. Isokpehi, Dr. Elizabeth R. Congdon and Dr. Katharina C. Wollenberg Valero. The award starts August 15, 2014 and ends July 31, 2017.

Franklin Beckwith, who is blind, couldn’t see the expanse of the current campus. But, he said he wants to be a part of educating the next generation and contribute to the school’s growth.
